The Citadel

The Citadel in Halifax is a classic high-ground fortification, still guarded by Mounted Police or other honor guard members daily.  The day I visited, the guard was dressed in full 1812 uniform as that date was the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of War by the United States in the War of 1812.  Of course, those who understand French had already seen the sign.

Titanic Burials

On the road back to Halifax we saw several picturesque tiny islands, then we went to the cemetery where over 100 graves remind us of the Titanic disaster a century ago.  The curve is in the shape of the hull of the wreckage.  Many years after the burials, it was discovered that the orientation of the hull here matches that of the wreck under the Atlantic Ocean.

Peggy's Cove

Our stop at Halifax offered a bus tour of the major sites of the area.  It began at the iconic Peggy's Cove, site of a beautiful lighthouse in the middle of a working fishing village.  How very striking to visit a tourist location where it felt completely non-touristy, even with two busloads of tourists walking the streets.  A very photogenic town.
