Corn

Seed corn does not look good to eat, of course, not to a human. But there is something attractive to the eye that I do not see in sweet corn. Oh, yes, the sweet corn looks brighter, more plump and tasty, more uniform in the ranks. But these, stacked and piled where they are tossed, have an individuality that is, as I noted, quite attractive to the eye.

Farmers

Today we see two more farmers, dressed in the style of the 1890s and assisting visitors to Kline Creek Farm for the annual Corn Harvest.

Kline Creek Corn Harvest

A sunny day in October brought me to the excellent Kline Creek Farm where folks were harvesting corn in the style of the 1890s. Quite a few people turned out to pull cobs of seed corn off the plants and load them into wagons for the farm animals. Others cut the stalks and stacked them into traditional signs of fall.

Our first two images are of a sad-fated cob that never made it to the wagon and one of the period-dressed farmers working the event.

River Boats

A visit to the Buffalo Bill Museum was interesting, more a LeClaire Iowa Museum than just one for Bill. About a third of the building has mementos from Cody, such as posters and pictures, but also the original fire engine and desks from local schools. But the best part was in the other two-thirds, where an old steam paddle boat is dry-docked and moved inside after a century on the river. The red paddles caught my eye most as I wondered how many miles of river were pushed by those blades.

After the town visit we stopped at a considerably newer, more modern river boat. One with a casino and a nice buffet dinner before heading home.

Colors Everywhere

Perhaps in part due to the sunny day, every building looked wonderful and colorful during our trip to LeClaire, Iowa. Indoors, many of the stores had displays of color either for sale or on display. Here we see a pretty building and a selection of glass; each one caught my eye.

Halloween in Iowa

Our visit to Iowa allowed time for a stroll down a wonderful Main Street, and stops in several interesting shops. Many of the shops were decorated for the upcoming Halloween events.
