A souvenir of a whirlwind trip to New Jersey for a family reunion totaling 53 people.  A wonderful sunset on the east coast.

Notre Dame Chapel

A completely different atmosphere fills the chapel, located around behind the main altar in Montreal's Notre Dame.  Bright, airy and small, the wooden front wall is carved into a mural of the image of Jesus and the Holy Spirit seen above and beyond three portals that suggest human lives.  Very peaceful and inspirational.

Montreal Notre Dame

Larger and much more ornate, Notre Dame in Montreal is just breathtaking.  The blue light haloing the main altar is peaceful and wonderful for contemplation and prayer.  I would have like the statue of St. Peter in any case, but as I recognized it as a replica of the statue in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, I liked it even better.

Notre Dame des Victories

Key feature of the upper level in Quebec is a nice church, one of many Notre Dames in the world.

Bi-Level Quebec City

Well into the St. Lawrence Seaway, we arrived at Quebec City, a bi-level gem with a nice enclave in the area of the port and another section of the city high above on a bluff.  Quaint city scenes and a funicular for quick up & down transportation.

Prince Edward Island

En route to the St. Laurence Seaway, we stopped at Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island, a quaint town with a beautiful cathedral up a hill.  Our guide for the walking tour was dressed as she would have been in 1864.  A pleasant day.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

While a great guide showed us some interesting museums and churches, the most photogenic site in Sydney was, believe it or not, the giant fiddle perched on the dock right next to our ship.

SUNDAY POSTER

This poster features a simple inspirational quote from the Gospel of Mark.  The illustration is of Jesus from the chapel at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.  The main church is breathtakingly beautiful, and the chapel is a wonderful art work of the nature of the Holy Spirit.  A memorable place to say a prayer.

The Citadel

The Citadel in Halifax is a classic high-ground fortification, still guarded by Mounted Police or other honor guard members daily.  The day I visited, the guard was dressed in full 1812 uniform as that date was the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of War by the United States in the War of 1812.  Of course, those who understand French had already seen the sign.

Titanic Burials

On the road back to Halifax we saw several picturesque tiny islands, then we went to the cemetery where over 100 graves remind us of the Titanic disaster a century ago.  The curve is in the shape of the hull of the wreckage.  Many years after the burials, it was discovered that the orientation of the hull here matches that of the wreck under the Atlantic Ocean.

Peggy's Cove

Our stop at Halifax offered a bus tour of the major sites of the area.  It began at the iconic Peggy's Cove, site of a beautiful lighthouse in the middle of a working fishing village.  How very striking to visit a tourist location where it felt completely non-touristy, even with two busloads of tourists walking the streets.  A very photogenic town.

Happy Independence Day Poster

Happy Independence Day.  'America the Beautiful' is such a wonderful anthem.  The first verse features the iconic amber waves of grain and the purple mountain's majesty, but this third verse always meant more to me.  Always liked the image of the 'alabaster cities,' here seen as Boston, it's skyline whitened for the occasion and backed by a wonderful full moon.
Both the first verse and this one, of course, also feature the prayer that we might someday 'crown our good with brotherhood' someday.  A goal to work for!

The Bar IN the Harbor

The 'bar' in Bar Harbor is not an establishment to have a cool drink.  In the upper picture, you are looking down Bridge Street to see that there does not appear to be any sort of a bridge.  That was at high tide.  Several hours later, the lower picture lets you look at the same area, only down to the right and looking across that first picture.  The 'bridge' is the sand bar that lends the town its name.
Quite common, we were told, for folks to drive out the gravelly bar for some fun in the sun; also quite common for people to lose track of time and get a car washed away in the incoming tide.

Bar Harbor

A pair of whitetails joined our walking tour of the mansions along the shore, but only for a short pose.  Later, we bussed to Acadia, a beautiful National Park.

Our day in Halifax, Canada, was the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of War in the War of 1812, a war I always thought of as Revolutionary War II The Sequel.  The guard at the Halifax Citadel wore an 1812 uniform in commemoration of the date.

Harbor Looks

Serene sailboat in the bay, and then two versions of the same look at the Boston skyline.  One is of course a normal perspective, while the other is the same photo with "polar coordinates."  The bottom of the pic is curled into the center, while the top is stretched around it carrying the building with it.  Love the view it gives of a good skyline!

Leaving Boston

We had flown in, landing at Logan Airport, but we were leaving by cruise ship on the way to Montreal.  It afforded us great views of the Boston skylie and the bay, and it put us in a unique place to watch planes land . . . right down the same runway we had landed on.

Joy of Athletics

Can it be true that a three-year old can remind us all of the true joy of sports?  Here Bobby is just running in one picture, getting into the ready position in the other.  Any doubt as to why he is here?  These are my favorites of him . . . he reminds me of me!

One If By Land

A highlight of the Freedom Trail is the Old North Church, accompanied by the dramatic statue of Paul Revere on the legendary ride.

Boston

Back from the first trip and looking forward to the second.   Our first stop was in Boston, where a visit to the grandchildren made Father' Day very special.  Here we see a skyline of Boston from the south suburbs, across the bay.  On a foray into the city, we walked a portion of the Freedom Trail, including Paul Revere's house.

Boston

Time for vacation.  This year I have decided not to post during my trips, as I prefer to present more finished photos than those taken on the fly.  Last night I drew up the file folders for a trip to Boston and a cruise to Montreal, and I am certain I will have plenty of images to show you after my return.  So the CLOSED -- ON VACATION sign is up from now until about June 26.  See you then!
